January is the reset month—quiet mornings, cups of tea, and the welcome feeling of putting things back in order after December. It’s also the perfect time to be kind to your hair. Central heating, wind, party styling and extra heat can leave hair feeling rougher than usual, colour a little flat, and ends more fragi

le. At Total Image Hair in Banbury, we treat January like a mini-MOT for your hair: a simple plan to restore softness and shine without fuss.

Think of your hair as fabric. December’s blow-dries and curling tongs are like wearing your favourite jumper every day—beautiful, but it needs a gentle wash and careful storage to look its best again. The quickest way to revive that fabric is a tidy shape. A small trim (even half a centimetre) removes frayed ends so hair doesn’t tangle and split further. Many clients tell us their hair “sits better” immediately—movement comes back, and styling takes less time. If you’ve been hesitating about a change, January is also a lovely moment for a soft face frame or an invisible weight-lift around the crown.

Moisture is the second rescue. Winter robs hair of water, so we focus on hydration first, then strength. In salon, that can mean a deep conditioning service tailored to your texture—lightweight masks for fine hair, richer creams for coarse or curly hair. If colour or lightening has left your hair feeling fragile, we can add a bond-building step to support the inner structure. The result isn’t heavy or greasy; it’s that quiet swish you notice when you put your coat on.

Colour needs a refresh too, but it doesn’t always need a full appointment. A glossing toner can brighten blondes that have picked up warmth, cool down brassiness in brunettes, or add a soft, candle-lit glow to natural hair. Toners are quick, gentle, and brilliant for bringing back shine—especially when indoor lighting is unflattering. We often pair a toner with a blow-dry so you leave looking finished without spending hours in the chair.

Frizz in British winter feels unfair—damp outside, dry inside. If humidity has the upper hand every morning, consider booking a keratin smoothing top-up now rather than waiting for spring. Smoothing doesn’t make your hair “stick straight”; it softens the fluff and speeds up your routine. Most clients tell us they can rough-dry for five minutes and still look put together. Not ready for an in-salon treatment? We can set you up with a home routine that genuinely works: a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo to preserve moisture; a light conditioner each wash; and a pea-sized serum on the ends only. The aim is fewer products used properly, not a cupboard full you don’t love.

Scalp comfort matters more than many realise. Central heating, hats and hairspray can leave your scalp tight or flaky, which in turn makes hair look dull at the roots. A short in-salon exfoliating cleanse followed by a soothing scalp massage resets everything and helps your hair fall more cleanly. At home, try spacing out washes to your natural rhythm (every 2–3 days for many people), and always detangle from the ends upward with a soft brush to avoid tugging.

If you use hot tools, January is the month to reset your technique. Towel-blot, apply heat protectant, then rough-dry until hair is at least 80% dry before introducing a brush—this reduces heat exposure dramatically. Keep your dryer on medium heat and high airflow, finishing with a cool blast to seal in shine. If you use straighteners, slow down rather than going over the same section repeatedly; one smooth pass at an appropriate temperature is kinder than three rushed ones.

Grey-blending remains popular with our clients who want a softer, lower-maintenance look. January is ideal for mapping a realistic plan: strategic highlights and lowlights placed to soften the line between natural sparkle and dyed sections. We’ll talk through timing so you’re not in the salon more than you’d like, while keeping the overall effect fresh. If you prefer full coverage, we can adjust your shade slightly warmer or cooler to suit winter skin tones and avoid dullness.

Holiday hair accessories are fun, but for everyday January we recommend kinder grips and snag-free bands. If you enjoy putting your hair up for walks or errands, try a loose low twist secured with two bobby pins crossed like an X—no pulling, no headaches, and it still looks intentional. Reserve a moment each night to brush gently and apply a drop of oil through the ends; three seconds that make a week’s difference.

Above all, be realistic and kind to yourself. Hair thrives on routine: a trim every 6–10 weeks depending on your cut, a monthly or six-weekly toner if you colour, and a deep treatment every fortnight through the coldest months. We’re always happy to tailor a simple, affordable schedule that feels doable and still gives you that “ah, that’s better” mirror moment.

Ready for your January hair MOT? Bring us your hair history and your diary. We’ll shape, hydrate and shine—so that by the time the daffodils show up, your hair already feels like spring.
