How to Look After Your Perm to Make It Last

Getting a perm can be very exciting but the aftercare it requires is essential to keep the curls intact. Many people are often disappointed by how soon they lose the curls. If you are wondering how you can make your perm last longer, the following are a few easy tips that help you do just that:

Avoid Any Other Treatments

When you get a perm, it can be stressful to your hair and can cause a bit of damage. One major thing you can do to aid recovery is by avoiding any other treatments. From hair colors to protein treatments and more, try to put them on hold for around 2 to 3 months. If you get it done during this time, it is likely that you will cause more damage to your hair.

Nourish and Repair

Repairing and nourishing your hair is also a necessity after a perm and hair masks are going to be your best friend. To keep additional chemicals out of your hair, try to use DIY ones with egg yolk, olive oil and other nourishing products. For any salon based treatments, you should always consult with your hairstylist before getting one done.

Deep Condition Religiously

Hair can become very dry after a perm and requires a lot of moisture. Without it, you will notice that your hair gets brittle and is more prone to breakage. To minimize this factor, it is a good idea to deep condition your hair once a week to help restore it. You can either use DIY hair deep conditioning methods or use organic ones from the store.

Switch Up Your Products

It is a good idea to switch up your hair products by getting ones that are safe for use with your perm. Based on the curl type of your perm, you should also pick products suited for them. These can include shampoos and conditioners for curly hair, curl defining products and more. Also, pick shampoos that are free of chemicals like SLS or parabens, which can be too harsh for your perm.

Try Co-Washing

Now that you are sporting curls, you should switch up your hair care routine by opting for co-washing. This moisturizes your hair and nourishes it perfectly and helps to keep the curls intact. Co-washing should also be done twice a week and you should avoid washing your hair every day. Once you are done washing your hair, you should use a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to dry your hair instead of a towel which can strip  your hair of a lot of moisture.
